CALGARY FASHION MEDIA & CALGARYFASHION.CA LAUNCH INDUSTRY AWARDS WITH HONORARY MERIT OF CALGARY FASHION ICONS

Kimberley Jev, Director of Calgary Fashion Media and leading fashion website CalgaryFashion.ca announce the launch of the Calgary Fashion Industry Awards. We kick off the first installment of the Calgary Fashion Industry Awards for 2011 with the Calgary Fashion Industry (Honorary) Awards.

As ambassadors of the industry, Calgary Fashion would like to honor and reward Calgary’s foundation of fashion professionals who have stood through the test of time with hard work and a steady dedication to their craft. We will also be hosting a unique online event that spans over the remaining days of December where our readers will get the chance to vote and reward Calgary’s up and coming members of the fashion industry today.

Up close and personal with a steady hand in the scene, Calgary Fashion has interacted for 4 solid years with the industries top boutiques, designers, bloggers, journalists and stylists as well as covered some of the hottest fashion events to date in the city. The Calgary Fashion Industry Awards  aims to celebrate the cities finest.

“Calgary is on the verge of exploding as a top city in Canada,” says Jev,  ”if we do not recognize the individuals who have put in the leg work for the up and coming, it will always seem as though we have had no real fashion in the city. The first installment of the awards, the Calgary Fashion Industry “Honorary” Awards is about recognizing the people who have maintained fashion careers in the city, honed their craft in the city and worked diligently and professionally with others locally and internationally. It’s time for us to celebrate the professionals who have given us a reason to exist as a fashion publication in Calgary.”

DARYL WHITE OF D.W PRESENTS THIRTY ONE O SEVEN

At Alberta Fashion Week, Daryl White of D.W impressed the crowd with his unique line of recycled couture and his one-of-a-kind tees covered in witty and uncommon punch lines like “You Hated Me in High School but Now I’m Fucking Fabulous”.

White says it was “nerve-wracking” to expose his somewhat explicit tees to an unfamiliar audience. However, the tees became an instant hit. The crowd’s admiration inspired White to create a side project by the name of 31:07 (thirtyoneo’seven) – a fundraising fashion show composed uniquely of unisex graphic tees with similar witty and “outrageous” messages. On the phone, White explained that each tee-shirt were custom-made from recycled material and designed with meaning. Their creations all came  from “fun random things” with the idea in mind that nowadays, “everything is mass-produced” and that there is a lack of unique custom-made creations. The tees pushed slogans, broke the rules, and played on social stereotypes all while keeping it environmentally-friendly.

He also explained he wanted to convey a “fun, casual atmosphere” for an enjoyable evening at Club Sapien – the venue of choice for 31: 07. White opted for an interactive runway show. The models posed for photographers at the end of the runway but then zigzagged through the crowd before going backstage. The event was hosted by Kim Flanagan and Danielle Kondruk, assisted behind-the-scenes by local stylist extraordinaire Domingo Lumanog, and Jacqueline Tyler handled marketing and PR.

At the end of the night, all tees were aunctioned off at the starting price of $40. The highest bid was of $95 for the white tee “Closets are for Clothes” sported by a blonde female model. Twenty-five percent of proceeds went to Kids Help Phone. At the event, White explained he partnered up with Kids Help Phone as he knew they’d always be there as a listening ear during his “coming out” years.
