There’s a new tenant in Fashion Central – Renegade Gypsy – and it’s a boutique like no other in Calgary. This beautiful store is arranged like a high-end design studio with an open walk-in wardrobe, full of colourful, trendy clothing. Renegade Gypsy is inspired by the world traveler – a role that Vickery knows all too well. Certain fabrics are eco-friendly and animal-friendly. Also, this clothing line consists of one-of-a-kind designs and all purchases come with a certificate of authenticity.
Jennifer Vickery, director of Renegade Gypsy, describes her shop as an “indie Canadian fashion boutique”. Her mission is to lead leaders of fashion. She works with a team where everyone is contributing positively with their own uniqueness and has the ambition to succeed in the tough fashion industry.
Current designers for Renegade Gypsy’s spring/summer 2011 include Calgary designers Kirsten Summersgill of Pout Clothing and Leah Bohnet of Broken Doll Clothing. Vickery plans on holding a designer search every season so Renegade Gypsy stays fresh and new. Designers not only get to display their work under one brand name, they will also receive mentorship from Vickery, who has been in the business for 12 years. She also has a background in business, fashion design and marketing.
Vickery teaches her designers the business side of the fashion industry – how to move fashion designs from the sketch book to the shopping bag. The best thing about the mentorship is “the opportunity to collaborate and brainstorm with people with the same fashion mindset,” says Summersgill.
Renegade Gypsy is actually two lines in one – “renegade” and “gypsy”. The “renegade” line is targeted towards business wear that are structured, conservative and darker in colour. You will see animal prints, tailored fits and stripes. The “gypsy” line is more playful, organic and colourful. This line features designs that are timeless with clean lines. Fabrics include stretch knits of vibrant colours, water colour prints, and flowy textures.
Make sure you stop by Fashion Central and visit Renegade Gypsy on the second floor. You might find that special piece to add to your summer wardrobe.
