As the last day of Alberta fashion week opened, it welcomed the debut of Calgarian designer Brook Fung. Her online boutique Peeko Apparel available via Etsy has already become a major attention grabber on the site and has also been a featured store many times. To highlight her further she designed a military style jacket with a feminine twist by adding a flared hem, which has quickly become the on trend item for the season. With snap buttons and contrasting trim it’s no wonder it was featured in September’s issue of Fashion Magazine and is handmade-to-order.
What makes Fung stand out from other designers at AFW was her choice of using reclaimed fibers “utilizing materials that we already have around and combining that with new materials” she stated.
It comes as a great surprise since her pieces present such cohesiveness and it can be hard to imagine that the fabrics are reclaimed in a striking dress that was once mens dress shirt. It was all in the details and Fungs craftsmanship couldn’t be denied, as a graduate from ACAD majoring in fibers she is locally trained and recognized far beyond with Etsy, hence to take the next step locally to show at AFW.
The color scheme was clean with a minimalist feel. Sticking to neutrals like black, grey, tan and white they would be items any women could incorporate into her wardrobe. Also Fung carried popular pieces from her previous designs and changed the fabrics to suit the season such as the box pleated neck scarf and geometric obi belt.
With her unique up-cycled pieces, translating to limited fabric, each item is a true one-of-a-kind piece. Not just from it’s material, but design as well, creating an asymmetrical layered skirt that can be worn from the front or back, cheeky half tights that stop at the knees and bondage inspired dresses with black harness like details overlaying the entire piece.
Designing is not all she does as the jewelry worn was also made by Fung which matched each outfit the faceted wooden cubes, a perfect addition as many frequent shapes in the line were triangles and hexagons.
Simply put Fung is a catalyst in eco-chic going the extra mile in making her clothing and when purchased online it is packaged in recycled or easily biodegradable products.
Fung is in the process of putting all her pieces on the shop site so check back for what’s available.
