Second in line on Day 2 of Alberta Fashion Week, was POUT Clothing by Kirsten Summersgill. The Pout Fall/Winter 2010 collection was heavy with black, which Summersgill wanted to shy away from when creating her Spring/Summer 2011 line.“Last season I did a lot of black and I did really stiff pleating, so I tried to make it more with the feminine, more about the fabrication. I wanted more pattern.” states the designer
Summersgill achieved much with the inclusion of bold pattern, which remained the theme throughout. Many pieces were very vibrant, creating a “party cruise feel” as she put it. The fabric also added to the feeling because it flowed freely on the models.
Though the first outfit was a simple black tank top paired with a short white skirt with knots along the front, the bold prints were not far behind. A bright coloured form fitting mini-dress with ruffles around the waistline was an instant must have. It will make you feel as though you are in a hot and sunny destination. Oh right, we’re in Calgary!
A frequently used material was an on trend camel coloured fabric which gave the appearance of silk, but was actually rayon and polyester blend. When the light hit it, the pieces would shine drawing attention to the model as she strutted past. Dresses, a skirt, a cropped jacket and shorts were a few of the pieces made from this material. Leopard printed lace, highly in tune with current fashion trends was also a part of the line, used in a dress and top along with a pair of jeans with a overlay of the feline fabric down the side of each leg: a luxurious extra touch.
Ultimately, Summersgill makes her clothes for women who enjoy dressing up. “I take the idea of feminine and then twist it a bit.” Her Fall collection is now available at Under the Bridge (36 – 4 Street NE) located in Bridgeland next to Il Sogno Italian restaurant.
