Founded in 1997 Leo Boutique has become somewhat of a legacy on the 17th avenue strip. It has outlasted countless other boutiques and can honestly say it is still thriving with the newest stock arriving to cater to Calgary’s stylish youth.
Known for carrying the latest denim, clothing and accessories for men and women it’s no wonder when meeting up with Charlee Sideen, who has managed the boutique for years that he knows style, and is quick to answer my questions about denim washes and what the best jean choice and trends for the fall are. Those answers being dark washes, skinny and straight cut jeans and leggings also the 50’s are coming back.
His favorite brands for clothing are L.A.M.B. the runway line designed by Gwen Stefani and for denim is Ksubi and A.G. Not to disregard other brands the store carries, Charlee is also adamant about the great leggings offered by Rich and Skinny, no longer is it about the jegging, jean leggings, it’s a cargo legging with a rich green wash they are perfect for that military influence.
Some other brands which are very popular are Wings + Horns, Free Love and Covet. As styles tend to change season to season I asked him what he has seen change in the last few years “it’s the styling of skinny jean, it’s a classic but no longer is it worn with really dark clothing sorry to say Emo, but more stylish now with plaid shirts and lace up shoes more of a hipster style” That being said the boutique has a great men’s wear and plaid shirts are abundant, but not to forget button up shirts and super soft leather lace ups are available as well.
Often men’s clothing is lacking when it is a store for both sexes, but that is not the case with Leo, it may be small as most boutiques are but it’s packed with consistent styles that can be worn for years and the utmost quality. Although most brands are not from Canada they have stocked some cute jewelry from Mimi & Marge which hails from Vancouver and provides accessories that are delicate and subtle, perfect for everyday wear.
Browsing through Leo you can feel that it is a store sure to stay no matter the financial climate because finding the perfect jean is one item that cannot be replaced.
Leo Boutique is located at 810 16th Avenue South West.
